Healing TOGETHER
Mental health issues and substance use have an effect on the whole family, not just on those who are struggling. That's why we believe in facilitating healing for the entire family unit.
FAMILY systems
The principles of family therapy are based on the belief that families are systems in which each member affects other members of the family. Because changes in one part of the system can cause changes elsewhere, family therapy focuses on changing a family's patterns of interaction, rather than trying to change each individual.
At Luna, we help families work together to identify the root causes of issues, including substance use, and develop a plan for moving forward. Therapists guide participants in understanding behavioral patterns that may be causing problems in their relationships, and develop new, more positive ways of relating to one another.
Therapy can help families heal old wounds, learn new coping skills, and build a stronger support system. When it comes to substance use, accountability and encouragement from within the family system can mean the difference between relapse and recovery.
WHAT WE address
Family therapy helps members develop healthier ways of communicating with each other. Therapists teach active listening skills, assertive communication, and techniques for expressing needs and emotions constructively.
Establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries is essential for healthy family functioning. Therapy helps family members understand where one person ends and another begins, creating respect for individual autonomy while maintaining connection.
Therapists provide tools and strategies for resolving disagreements in constructive ways. Families learn problem-solving techniques and conflict resolution skills that reduce tension and strengthen relationships.
Family members learn how to best support their loved one's recovery journey while also taking care of their own needs. This includes understanding addiction, recognizing enabling behaviors, and creating accountability within the family system.
THE process
The therapist meets with family members to understand family dynamics, relationships, communication patterns, and the challenges that brought the family to therapy. This assessment includes gathering family history and identifying strengths.
Together, the family and therapist identify problematic patterns of interaction and set goals for therapy. This collaborative process ensures everyone is working toward the same objectives and understands their role in the family system.
Through guided sessions, families practice new ways of communicating, learn conflict resolution skills, and develop healthier relationship patterns. Therapists may assign homework to practice skills between sessions.
As the family makes progress, the therapist continues to provide support, adjust interventions as needed, and help the family maintain positive changes. The goal is sustainable improvement in family functioning.
OUR approach
Luna offers weekly family therapy sessions facilitated by licensed therapists. These sessions provide a safe space for families to work through challenges, improve communication, and strengthen their support system.
We provide psychoeducational groups that teach families about addiction, mental health, co-dependency, and recovery. Understanding these topics helps families become better supporters of their loved one's healing journey.
For couples affected by substance use or mental health challenges, we offer specialized couples therapy to address relationship dynamics, rebuild trust, and strengthen the partnership through recovery.
Beyond formal therapy, Luna hosts weekly family support meetings where families can connect with others facing similar challenges, share experiences, and build a community of support.
Family therapy is beneficial for any family affected by substance use disorder or mental health challenges. The work benefits both the individual in treatment and their family members.
