Alvaro Guevara
A Licensed Professional Counselor who has been in the mental health field since 2008, Alvaro supports other therapists at Luna and helps with clinical decision-making. He also provides individual, family, and group therapy for adolescents and adults, and he supported development of the adolescent program.
Clients appreciate Alvaro’s warmth, humility, understanding and respect, as well as the skills he shares to improve their quality of life. Alvaro approaches treatment by validating clients, avoiding assumptions about what kind of care they need, listening fully, ensuring treatment is relevant to their needs, and shifting direction as needed while staying focused on clients’ original goals.
Alvaro’s areas of specialization include adolescents, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm, addiction, and family therapy. He is skilled in modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT, Prolonged Exposure, Trauma-Informed Care, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Past experiences have given Alvaro deep expertise for his role at Luna. He has provided services to low-income individuals with serious and persistent mental illnesses; worked with adolescents in the residential, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings; and been director of clinical services at a residential facility. Working with people from ages 12-70 with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and cultures, he’s seen firsthand the struggles that clients have when reintegrating into the home after residential care, as well as the challenges of increasing care for a client.
Alvaro holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Houston and a master’s in psychology from Houston Baptist University. He previously served in the Army for three years in a military intelligence position. Today he is a dad who enjoys UFC and anime.
